Belonging

Belonging

Belonging is the feeling of being accepted, understood, valued, and connected to a community without compromising who you are.

More about this emotion

It differs from fitting in which requires us to make an effort to satisfy the expectations of the group. When we truly belong, we don't need to change how we act, hide what we think, or pretend to be who we aren't.

Belonging also gives us a sense of security, comfort, and emotional well-being. It reinforces the idea that we are an integral part of something larger than ourselves.

Finally, belonging is essential for mental and emotional health, as it fosters feelings of safety, support, and positive identity. In particular, according to Eileen Kennedy-Moore, belonging is key to the development of children's self-esteem and confidence.

According to Brené Brown, the related emotion of "belonging uncertainty" is the feeling of doubt or insecurity regarding one's sense of belonging or acceptance.

Quotes

The truth is: Belonging starts with self-acceptance. Your level of belonging, in fact, can never be greater than your level of self-acceptance, because believing that you're enough is what gives you the courage to be authentic, vulnerable and imperfect.
