Apathy

Apathy

Apathy is a feeling of indifference or lack of interest, enthusiasm, and motivation. It can manifest itself as a lack of goal-oriented activities.

More about this emotion

In a 2021 article for Psychology Today, Krystine Batcho (a professor at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY) mentions that some research found that selective apathy, when intentionally employed to protect one’s emotional well-being, improve focus, or regulate stress, can indeed be helpful in specific contexts.

However, it’s important to distinguish it from pathological apathy, which may be associated with certain disorders, such as major depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease.
